Yesterday I had the opportunity to not only enjoy the beautiful weather Athens has been having as of late, but to also help my friend, Jaden cross something off her bucket list--eating Bagel Street Deli sandwiches on the Athens County Court House steps. It's a clutch spot for people watching and basking in the sunshine--two of my favorite things. Jaden wasn't disappointed by the pure 20 minute bliss we experienced.
Jaden is a senior hospitality major from Virginia and lucky for me, she isn't quite ready to graduate. In fact, she'll be a "super" senior for all of next year. However, she's treating this quarter as if it's her last quarter at OU with a bucket list checklist hung proudly in her room (when it's not hidden under her piles of clothes...her room looks eerily similar to mine).
Bagel Street is a locally owned bagel shop that makes the most delicious sandwiches (and pickles). There's everything from the Wendy's Way (personal favorite--turkey, spinach cream cheese, avocado and sprouts) to the dedicated OU Bobcat (roast beef and smoked cheddar). I always recommend it to visitors and freshmen.
Unfortunately, every time I enter BSD--I'm reminded of my mom's favorite sandwich. I'm not sure if I've told you about my mom, but let me preface it by saying she is exactly like Leigh Anne Tuohy in The Blind Side, down to the size, looks and sass. She's also a huge food snob, but she sure loves BSD. Her favorite sandwich is naturally the Balls Deep--a mess of meatballs, onion, spicy mustard and pretty much any ingredient guaranteed to give you heartburn. It's also the most uncomfortable name on the menu. Who wants to hear their mom order a Balls Deep? Not this girl, but I miss her just enough that I would sacrifice the embarrassment to see her.
Until next time,
Mak
Ahhh! Bagel Street is so clutch, I love it. Every time I walk in there, I feel like the place perfectly reflects Athens. From the huge vegetarian selection, to the chalk covered brick walls, to the foil figurines. However, being a food junkie myself, I'd recommend putting Miller's Chicken on your bucket list if you haven't had it yet. The townies do know what they're talking about when they rave about it!
ReplyDeleteMak, Bagel Street is amazing! I'm so disappointed that I discovered it for the first time this year. I feel like I've been deprived for the past two years. I agree with Samantha, though; BSD pretty much epitomizes everything Athens. I'd even throw O'Betty's into the same category. As far as more bucket list ideas, I was told at pre-college that every OU student must do two things:
ReplyDelete1. Eat at Burrito Buggy
2. Climb the rock wall in Ping
I haven't done either of these yet, sadly, but I love the concept for your blog! I look forward to your future posts!

So, was the clutch part of the Bucket List "to-do" getting BSD or eating on the Court House steps? Something about the combo?!?...having not done either, I'm curious....
ReplyDeleteJen,
ReplyDeleteI think it's something about the combination that makes it heavenly :) You have to try it sometime!
